Who qualifies

Americans can live in Albania for up to a year without a visa or residence permit, a perk Albania gives few other nationalities. To start a new year you leave for 90 days. For a formal, longer stay, the Unique Permit for remote workers runs a year at a time and can be renewed up to 5 years.

  • Remote employees of companies outside Albania: yes.
  • Freelancers and business owners: yes.
  • Money: No income test for the visa-free year. The Unique Permit asks for proof of income from abroad over the previous 12 months, with a minimum set in secondary legislation; confirm it with the migration authority.

Open question: The one-year stay rests on a government decision that was briefly withdrawn in January 2022 and restored that March. Check with the US Embassy in Tirana before you go.

Documents

Carry these when you arrive. The Unique Permit asks for more, including apostilled US documents.

  • US passport valid at least 6 months
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of funds and, for shorter stays, a return ticket
  • Health insurance (recommended, not checked)

Step by step from the US

  1. Check your passport: it should be valid at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.
  2. Arrive visa-free and keep your entry stamp: your year starts that day.
  3. Register your address with local police if you'll stay more than 90 days.
  4. Track your days for immigration (one year) and tax (183 days).
  5. For a longer move, apply for a Unique Permit through e-Albania before your year runs out.

Taxes

  • Spend more than 183 days in Albania in a year and you can become an Albanian tax resident
  • Some sources report a 12-month income tax exemption for Unique Permit holders working remotely; confirm with an accountant
  • No US-Albania income tax treaty or totalization agreement
  • US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking a quick trip to Kosovo or Montenegro resets the year: you need 90 days outside Albania
  • Skipping police registration after 90 days
  • Overstaying: fines are steep and can complicate future residency
