Who qualifies

Taiwan's digital nomad visa, introduced in 2025 and extended in 2026, lets remote employees and business owners stay up to 2 years in 6-month blocks. Income needed: $40,000 a year, or $20,000 if you're in your 20s, plus $10,000 in the bank.

  • Remote employees of companies outside Taiwan: yes.
  • Freelancers and business owners: not on this route; check the alternatives below.
  • Income: At least $40,000 a year ($20,000 for ages 20 to 29), plus an average bank balance of $10,000 over the past 6 months. That's about $3,330 a month.

Open question: Taiwan hasn't published dependent rules for this visa in English.

Documents

Order US documents first: apostilles and FBI checks are the slowest part.

  • Passport
  • Proof of remote employment or business ownership outside Taiwan
  • Proof of income and 6 months of bank statements
  • International health insurance

Step by step from the US

  1. Check your numbers against the rule above, using the last 6 to 12 months of income.
  2. Order US documents: FBI background check, apostilles and translations where needed.
  3. Apply: At a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the US.
  4. Buy health insurance that meets the requirement for your whole stay.
  5. Arrive and register your address and any residence card on time.

Taxes

  • 183 days in a calendar year makes you a Taiwan tax resident; Taiwan mainly taxes Taiwan-source income
  • No US-Taiwan totalization agreement
  • US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.

Common mistakes

  • Each 6-month renewal needs a new application
  • Check the Employment Gold Card if you work in tech, finance or the arts
