Who qualifies

  • Remote employees of companies outside New Zealand: yes.
  • Freelancers and business owners: yes.
  • Money: No income minimum. You may not work for New Zealand employers or provide goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand.

Open question: Stay limits depend on the visa you hold; check with Immigration New Zealand before a long trip.

Documents

Order US documents first: apostilles and FBI checks are the slowest part.

  • Passport
  • NZeTA
  • Proof of funds and onward travel

Step by step from the US

  1. Decide how long you'll stay and check the visitor rules above.
  2. Before you fly: NZeTA through the official app or Immigration New Zealand website; longer stays with a visitor visa application.
  3. Buy health insurance for the whole trip.
  4. Track your days for both immigration and tax.
  5. For a longer move, look at the residence routes below with a local adviser.

Taxes

  • Up to 92 days in New Zealand in 12 months generally keeps foreign-taxed income exempt; the US treaty can extend this to 183 days
  • Over the limit, income is taxed from day one at resident rates
  • No US-New Zealand totalization agreement
  • US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.

Common mistakes

  • Don't serve New Zealand clients as a visitor
  • Track your days for the tax limit
  • Queenstown and Auckland rentals are expensive
