Who qualifies

Malaysia's DE Rantau Nomad Pass is one of Asia's easiest: $24,000 a year for tech and digital workers ($60,000 for other fields), for 3 to 12 months, renewable to 2 years. English is widely spoken.

  • Remote employees of companies outside Malaysia: yes.
  • Freelancers and business owners: yes.
  • Income: At least $24,000 a year for tech and digital roles; $60,000 for other roles such as founders, accountants and lawyers. That's about $2,000 a month.

Open question: Malaysia's foreign-income exemption has conditions; confirm with a tax adviser.

Documents

Order US documents first: apostilles and FBI checks are the slowest part.

  • Passport
  • Proof of remote work (employment or client contracts)
  • Proof of income
  • Health insurance
  • Background check

Step by step from the US

  1. Check your numbers against the rule above, using the last 6 to 12 months of income.
  2. Order US documents: FBI background check, apostilles and translations where needed.
  3. Apply: Online through MDEC's DE Rantau page, from anywhere.
  4. Buy health insurance that meets the requirement for your whole stay.
  5. Arrive and register your address and any residence card on time.

Taxes

  • 182 days in a year makes you a Malaysian tax resident; foreign income brought into Malaysia is currently exempt for individuals until 2036 under conditions
  • No US-Malaysia tax treaty or totalization agreement
  • US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.

Common mistakes

  • The pass covers Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan, not Sabah or Sarawak (so not Kota Kinabalu)
  • A longer stay beyond 2 years was announced in late 2026 but has no start date yet
