Who qualifies

El Salvador uses the US dollar and offers a digital nomad visa for remote workers earning at least $1,460 a month, valid for up to 2 years and renewable for 2 more. Safety has improved dramatically, and Bitcoin is accepted in many places.

  • Remote employees of companies outside El Salvador: yes.
  • Freelancers and business owners: yes.
  • Income: At least $1,460 a month from employers or clients outside El Salvador. That's about $1,460 a month.

Open question: We couldn't find the legal text for the visa; confirm the current fee and income figure with the consulate.

Documents

Order US documents first: apostilles and FBI checks are the slowest part.

  • Passport valid 6+ months
  • Notarized employment or freelance contracts
  • Proof of $1,460+ monthly income
  • Medical and travel insurance
  • Criminal record from the last 6 months

Step by step from the US

  1. Check your numbers against the rule above, using the last 6 to 12 months of income.
  2. Order US documents: FBI background check, apostilles and translations where needed.
  3. Apply: At a Salvadoran embassy or consulate, or through authorized agencies.
  4. Buy health insurance that meets the requirement for your whole stay.
  5. Arrive and register your address and any residence card on time.

Taxes

  • El Salvador generally taxes Salvadoran-source income; foreign earnings are reported as exempt for visa holders
  • No US-El Salvador tax treaty or totalization agreement
  • US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.

Common mistakes

  • Agency fees can dwarf government fees; compare quotes
  • You can't take local employment on this visa
