Who qualifies
Cambodia has no digital nomad visa, but long stays are common: enter on an ordinary (E-class) visa, then extend it inside the country for up to a year at a time. The US dollar circulates everywhere.
- Remote employees of companies outside Cambodia: yes.
- Freelancers and business owners: yes.
- Money: No income minimum. Some extension types ask for a work permit or proof of activity; rules change, so confirm when you extend.
Open question: Cambodia hasn't said whether remote workers for foreign employers need a work permit.
Documents
Order US documents first: apostilles and FBI checks are the slowest part.
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Passport photos
- Visa fee
- For extensions: application through Immigration or an agent
Step by step from the US
- Check your numbers against the rule above, using the last 6 to 12 months of income.
- Order US documents: FBI background check, apostilles and translations where needed.
- Apply: E-class visa on arrival or e-visa; extensions with the General Department of Immigration, often through an agent.
- Buy health insurance that meets the requirement for your whole stay.
- Arrive and register your address and any residence card on time.
Taxes
- More than 182 days in 12 months, or a home in Cambodia, makes you tax resident, taxed on Cambodian and foreign income at up to 20%
- No US-Cambodia tax treaty or totalization agreement
- US citizens still file a US return every year. The foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900 for 2026; the foreign tax credit is the alternative. See our US taxes guide.
Common mistakes
- Get the E-class (ordinary) visa, not the tourist visa: tourist visas can't be extended long term
- Work-permit rules for foreigners have been tightened; ask before you extend
- Healthcare is limited; many expats go to Bangkok for serious care
